The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has officially launched activities to mark its 70th anniversary, with management pledging renewed commitment to quality healthcare delivery, medical education and research.
The launch ceremony, held in Kumasi on Monday, December 22, 2025, was attended by health professionals, traditional leaders, partners and stakeholders.
The anniversary is being celebrated under the theme “70 Years of Impacting Lives: Celebrating the Past and Repositioning for the Future.”

Speaking at the event, the Chief Executive Officer of KATH, Dr. Paa Kwasi Baidoo, said the anniversary celebrations would be marked by a series of activities aimed at honouring the hospital’s legacy while positioning it for future growth.

He announced that the programme of activities will include medical outreach programmes by various directorates, events to recognise and honour past and present staff and partners for long service and outstanding contributions, public lectures and symposia on health and research, as well as fundraising activities to support the hospital’s modernisation drive.
Dr. Baidoo said the celebrations are not only to commemorate a milestone but to reflect on the hospital’s impact on millions of lives across Ghana and beyond through specialist healthcare, training and research.
Tracing the hospital’s history, he said the facility was constructed in the early 1950s by the British firm G. Walker and Slatter and completed in 1954. It was officially commissioned in 1955 as the Kumasi Central Hospital before being renamed Komfo Anokye Hospital after Ghana’s independence in 1957, in honour of the legendary Asante priest Komfo Anokye.
He noted that the hospital has for decades served as the main referral centre for the middle and northern belts of the country, a role it continues to play.
Dr. Baidoo further highlighted a major milestone in 1975 when the hospital was designated a teaching hospital following the establishment of the School of Medical Sciences at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), making it a key institution for training medical professionals in the country.
Also speaking at the event, the Board Chairman of the hospital, Otumfuo Hiahene Nana Prof. Oheneba Boachie Adjei described the 70th anniversary as a call to action rather than just a celebration of longevity.
He said the board is committed to strengthening governance, investing in human resources and infrastructure, embracing innovation and undertaking strategic reforms to ensure the hospital remains a well-resourced and sustainable tertiary medical centre,
“This anniversary is a reminder that the future calls for renewed leadership and strategic transformation,” he said, adding that the hospital is prepared to reposition itself to meet the healthcare needs of future generations.
Otumfuo Hiahene officially declared the 70th anniversary celebrations launched and expressed optimism about the series of activities scheduled to take place throughout 2026.
