The Executive Director of the Legal Aid Service, Mr. Edmond Folie, has revealed plans to align the agency’s operations with the government’s 24-hour economy policy to enhance justice delivery across the country.
Speaking at the ongoing Greater Accra Law Week celebration in Accra, Mr. Folie said the Legal Aid Service is exploring innovative ways to provide round-the-clock legal assistance to the public. The initiative, he noted, will include the establishment of a 24-hour call center to ensure that lawyers are available at all times to offer legal advice, particularly to vulnerable populations.
“As a commission, we are working closely with the Greater Accra Bar Association to explore how best we can provide call-in services under the 24-hour economy policy,” he stated. “This will allow us to have lawyers on call to respond to legal needs promptly, as part of our constitutional duty under Article 294.”
Mr. Folie also emphasized the need to expand legal support for women, particularly in light of Ghana’s recent passage of the Affirmative Action Act and its ongoing commitment to the Maputo Protocol on the Rights of Women in Africa. He noted that this year marks the 20th anniversary of the protocol’s entry into force, highlighting the importance of gender equality in access to justice.
“This year, during Legal Aid Week in October, we aim to expand our legal services to better support women, especially those who face challenges accessing justice,” he said. “We invite all stakeholders to join us in this critical initiative.”
Mr. Folie reaffirmed the Legal Aid Service’s commitment to innovation and inclusivity in legal service delivery and pledged the commission’s full support to the Greater Accra Bar Association and lawyers nationwide.
He concluded by wishing participants a successful and impactful Law Week celebration, saying, “We look forward to a motivating and productive week. I wish you all a happy celebration and leave you in God’s able hands.”
