In a weird linkage, the low patronage of the ongoing voters’ exihbition exercise across the country is being attributed to the huge sums of money the government paid to the state broadcaster, GBC, for the coverage of the 13th All African Games, which was held in Ghana in March 2023.
According to the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Andrews Nana Kwasi, people have abandoned exhibition centres discussing corruption in government
“The payment is leaving Ghanaians into state of shock. Everyone is talking about it because they don’t understand why such money be paid. The corruption in government is too high.
“They’re not going to check their names because this government is corrupt and can’t help”, the soft spoken Chairman give his opinion on Ezra TV when asked why by host, Kofi Asante Enning why most Ghanaians appear not to have interest in the exercise .
During his appearance before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, revealed government paid more than $3 million to GBC for the coverage of the games.
The ministry issued a statement insisting that it paid GBC $3.6 million and gave a breakdown as follows:
“From the total amount, $2.5 million was paid directly to GBC in two tranches: $1 million and $1.5 million on March 13, 2024, and May 22, 2024, respectively. Another amount of $1 million was paid to third parties upon the instructions of GBC, in accordance with the contract.”
However, the GBC has denied the Minister’s claim.
