Minority Members of Parliament have marched to the offices of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to show support for Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, who has been in EOCO custody since May 27.
Led by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the MPs described their action as both a protest and a sign of solidarity. They believe Wontumi is being treated unfairly in an ongoing investigation involving alleged financial misconduct with EXIMBANK.
Speaking in Parliament before the march, Afenyo-Markin urged EOCO to conduct its investigations within the law. “Do your work, but respect the law,” he said, warning that the harsh treatment could set a dangerous precedent for the future.
The Minority raised concerns about Wontumi’s bail conditions, which include a GHS50 million bond and two sureties. “Where is he going to get that from?” Afenyo-Markin asked, calling the terms excessive.
He added that unless EOCO changes its approach, NPP Minority MPs will continue to boycott Parliament and even spend the night at EOCO in protest. “We are all going to sleep there with him. We won’t ask for any property,” he said.
Afenyo-Markin also called on all MPs, regardless of party, to support the cause. “Let EOCO know that when it came to Wontumi, Parliament stood united,” he said.
