Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has predicted that the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) will soon find itself mired in internal strife and voter apathy far worse than anything experienced by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) during its time in government.
Speaking in a widely circulated social media video, Afenyo-Markin addressed NPP loyalists following the release of Adenta Kumi, asserting that the tactics the NDC deployed against the NPP while in opposition will be intensified under its own administration.
“Every single thing they used against us, you realize that they will even do worse things,” Afenyo-Markin stated.
He went on to forecast that the NDC will soon grapple with leadership issues, especially with President Mahama limited to a single term.
“Mahama has only one term, so they will have to bring a new leader. That’s where you will see- when it was ours, they thought they were doing us? No problem. Apathy will come to their side in 2028.”
Afenyo-Markin pointed to recent election data as evidence of shifting voter sentiment.
He highlighted that while the Ashanti Region, an NPP stronghold, recorded a 67% voter turnout, the Volta Region, traditionally loyal to the NDC, managed only 65%.
“With all the noise, Greater Accra’s turnout was just 55%. That’s when our own base did not even vote,” he added, emphasizing that the ruling party should expect even lower turnout in the next general election.
He urged NPP members not to worry about the current state of the party, arguing that voter apathy is a natural consequence of being in government.
“Nobody in the party should be worried. You go into any government, when you’re going for an election, the apathy is against you. We just have to stick together and make our party attractive.”
Afenyo-Markin also dismissed concerns about the NDC’s financial influence, stating, “They can share all the money they can have in the world, they can think that they will buy every media house, so be it. Time will expose all of these.”
