The National Identification Authority (NIA) has announced a major initiative to address the backlog of unissued Ghana Cards, marking a significant step in its mission to ensure every eligible Ghanaian has access to the country’s primary form of identification.
In a statement issued on Monday, April 7, 2025, the NIA urged applicants to visit their respective district offices to collect their long-awaited cards.
This exercise comes as part of the NIA’s broader effort to streamline its operations and enhance national identity verification.
The Ghana Card, which serves as a vital tool for accessing public services, financial transactions, and voting, has faced distribution challenges since mid-2023, leaving thousands of applicants in limbo.
In the statement signed by Williams Darlas, Acting Head of the Corporate Affairs Directorate at the NIA, the authority assured applicants that card issuance has officially resumed.
“All Ghanaians who applied for the first issuance, replacement, or update of personal records from June 2023 in Greater Accra and have not yet received their cards are assured that, effective Monday, April 7, 2025, the issuance of the Ghana Cards will begin at the respective District Offices where they registered”.
The NIA has also confirmed that district offices nationwide have been supplied with enough blank cards to process new applications free of charge.
However, applicants seeking replacements or updates to their personal records will be required to pay fees of 125 and 60 cedis respectively.
“The NIA would like to emphasize that the issuance of the printed backlog of Ghana Cards and first- time issuance (new registration) at all NIA District Offices are FREE of charge.
“The public is urged to report any NIA staff who demands a fee in exchange for these services.”
