Dennis Miracles Aboagye, the Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) 2024 election campaign of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has disclosed that a proposal to abolish the betting tax and the E-Levy was submitted to the Cabinet by Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia was ultimately rejected by a majority decision.
Speaking in an interview with GHOne TV, Aboagye stated, “Dr. Bawumia proposed the abolition of the betting tax and the E-Levy to the Cabinet, but the Cabinet disagreed with him. He is not the only person in government,” he noted.
Responding to a question from host Serwaa Amihere about when the Vice President submitted the proposal to the Cabinet, Aboagye explained, “Dr. Bawumia made his position on the betting tax and E-Levy clear several months ago, almost a year. But he is not the President—we run an executive presidency. You can engage in politics and be sentimental, but the facts are the facts.”
He further elaborated, “You can be a minister or Vice President, but at the Cabinet level, there’s something we call collective responsibility, which rests with the President. So, when the Cabinet makes a decision, we are all collectively part of that decision.”
Aboagye emphasized that while he represents the ruling New Patriotic Party and the government, he does not necessarily agree with every policy the government implements. “Why would you think, as the Communications Director, that I support everything the government does just because I speak for the government? I disagree with a lot, but I take collective responsibility for government decisions. That is how sane societies operate; that is the essence of democracy. Otherwise, there would be chaos,” he stressed.
