The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Majority Caucus has announced a boycott of parliamentary business, citing alleged illegal and unconstitutional actions by Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon Alban Bagbin.
The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, yesterday October 17th declared four parliamentary seats vacant on the premise that the current occupants have defected by filing to contest the next elections on tickets different from what they represent in the current Parliament.
The ruling effectively ended the tenure of Agona West Member of Parliament (MP), Cynthia Morrison of the New Patriotic Party (NPP); Amenfi Central MP, Peter Yaw Kwakye-Ackah of the National Democratic Congress (NDC); Suhum MP, Kwadwo Asante of the NPP, and Fomena MP, Andrew Asiamah Amoako, an independent MP.
The NPP leadership has pledged its unwavering support to the Majority Caucus in their fight against what they deem a politically motivated injustice.
The party has also urged its Members of Parliament (MPs) contesting in the upcoming elections to utilize the boycott period to intensify their campaigns in their respective constituencies.
“The party further urges its Members of Parliament who are contesting as Parliamentary Candidates to take advantage of the period of boycott to sustain their campaigns at the various constituencies in furtherance of our overarching goal of securing a third consecutive general elections victory in December 2024”.
This move according to the General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Kodua Frimpong, aims to bolster the party’s chances of securing a historic third consecutive general election victory in December 2024.
The boycott comes amidst growing tensions ahead of the 2024 polls, with the NPP seeking to maintain its parliamentary majority.
