The New Patriotic Party (NPP) says that it will hold its presidential primaries on January 31, 2026, as part of preparations for the 2028 general elections.
The date was approved at an emergency meeting held on Tuesday, June 17, 2025 at Alisa Hotel by the party’s National Executive Committee and National Council.
Speaking after the meeting, the party’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, explained that the decision to hold the primaries at the end of January 2026 complies with the party’s constitution and does not require any amendments.
He added that this timeline provides ample room for a well-organized and competitive internal election process.
“The Committee also spoke about the time for our presidential primaries. And again, the Committee agrees that that decision does not warrant amendment of our Constitution. And the National Council today also made the decision that the date for our presidential primaries is set for January 31, 2026. That will be the date that we shall hold our presidential primaries,” Kodua stated.
The upcoming primaries are expected to draw considerable attention, with several influential figures likely to contest for the chance to lead the NPP into the 2028 elections.
These include former Vice President and 2024 presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, former Minister for Food and Agriculture Dr. Bryan Acheampong, and former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko.
Party officials say nomination guidelines, campaign schedules, and the code of conduct for aspirants will be made public in the coming weeks.
They have also assured members and the public that the process will be transparent, credible, and reflective of the NPP’s democratic traditions.
