Renowned preacher and founder of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC), Pastor Mensa Otabil, has expressed deep concerns about the current state of the charismatic church, warning that it is on a “one-way highway drive to self-destruction.
” In a recent sermon, Pastor Otabil lamented the erosion of integrity and credibility within the church, especially in the use of noble religious titles.
Speaking passionately, Otabil pointed out that the once-revered roles of “prophet,” “apostle,” and “bishop” have been cheapened, with individuals adopting these titles without the rigorous training or spiritual preparation they once required. He compared this to someone claiming to be a lawyer or doctor without attending law or medical school, underscoring the lack of regulatory oversight in today’s charismatic movements.
“When I was growing up, a bishop was a noble figure in the church, primarily in the Catholic and Anglican churches, where titles were earned based on established diocesan systems,” Otabil said. He noted that in Ghana, both the Catholic and Anglican churches had a limited number of bishops, all of whom were respected for their spiritual authority and education. In contrast, he criticized the charismatic and Pentecostal movements for diluting these titles and devaluing their significance.
Pastor Otabil further expressed concern over the handling of confidential information by some charismatic pastors, especially in matters of personal or spiritual counseling.
He highlighted how the lack of discretion among some clergy has led to public humiliation of church members.
“Sometimes, we describe people’s health challenges publicly, and after disgracing them, there is no healing,” he remarked. He warned that this mishandling of sensitive information could damage the trust between the congregation and its leaders.
The pastor drew comparisons between the charismatic and more traditional churches, praising the Catholic and Anglican clergy for their commitment to confidentiality and pastoral care.
In contrast, he argued that some charismatic leaders use private information to manipulate and control congregants, citing examples of pastors who pressure followers into making financial contributions by threatening to disclose personal details.
The motivational speaker encouraged charismatic leaders to return to the core principles of humility, discretion, and spiritual discipline, warning that without change, the church is headed for collapse.
“The charismatic church must introspect and correct its course, or it risks losing the confidence of the public and destroying itself from within,” he said.
