The flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has said that true leadership is built on honesty, not on making unrealistic promises.
Speaking during a visit to the Chiefs and community members of Wichaeu as part of his three-day campaign tour in the Upper West Region, Mahama criticized the current administration’s handling of the country’s affairs, urging Ghanaians to reflect on the lessons learned over the past eight years.
In his address, Mahama highlighted the challenges Ghanaians have faced under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government led by President Nana Akufo-Addo, arguing that these years have provided important insights into the difference between rhetoric and real leadership.
“A good leader is not the one who makes the sweetest promises,” Mahama stated. “The one who makes a good leader is the one who tells you the truth, is honest, and doesn’t promise what he cannot deliver.”
The former President accused the Akufo-Addo administration of failing to fulfill the promises it made ahead of the 2016 elections, attributing the country’s current economic difficulties to these unfulfilled pledges. He argued that many of the social and economic challenges Ghanaians face today are the result of misplaced trust in a leadership that relied on unproven ideas.
“We gave him [Akufo-Addo] a chance in 2016, and the outcome is what we see today,” Mahama remarked. “Where the country is now is not a time for trial and error. We need an experienced leader to restore the nation and put it back on its feet.”
Mahama stressed that the 2024 elections would be a turning point for Ghana, particularly for the youth, who he said could no longer afford to gamble with their future. He underscored the need for experienced leadership, asserting that his track record makes him the right candidate to navigate the country through its economic hardships and toward recovery.
“I am determined to restore confidence in Ghana’s governance and lead the way toward economic recovery,” Mahama told the gathering, urging voters to reject political experimentation and instead elect leaders who have proven their ability to deliver results.
The visit to Wichaeu forms part of Mahama’s broader strategy to engage with communities at the grassroots level and present his vision for the nation ahead of the 2024 general elections.
