Labor expert and former minister, Austin Gamey, is calling on organize labour leadership to apologize to themselves and the entire country for what he described as “disappointment behavior towards order members of organized labour’’ during the suspension of their plan nationwide strike against illegal mining also known as Galamsey and dramatic style.
The senior citizen is also concerns about the government’s approach to combating illegal mining, particularly with regard to the recent destruction of equipment such as excavators and chamfers among others by security forces.
Speaking on TV3’s Point of View, Mr. Gamey noted that while sending soldiers to dismantle illegal mining operations may seem like a solution, it is not sustainable in the long run.
According to him, these military interventions are temporary, and once the forces withdraw, miners often return to resume their activities.
He emphasized the need to identify and hold accountable those who finance the illegal mining operations by purchasing equipment like excavators.
“These machines are not invisible,” he stated, adding that authorities could trace the equipment owners through tax records and identification numbers.
The labor expert concluded that unless the financiers of the illegal mining industry are identified and prosecuted, the cycle of destruction and rebuilding will continue, with no long-term resolution to the galamsey issue.
