The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has called on African countries to adopt governance systems that are more aligned with their unique cultural traditions, rather than copying European and American models that may not suit their needs.
Speaking during a visit by Congo’s State Minister, Jean Jacques Bouya, at the Manhyia Palace, Otumfuo emphasized the importance of Africa crafting its own path towards democracy and development.
“France is practicing its democracy according to its traditions. Congo should have a democracy that suits its own tradition and culture,” Otumfuo remarked, urging African nations to embrace governance structures that reflect their cultural heritage.
He also advocated for greater freedom of movement and investment across the continent, stressing the need for African nations to make it easier for citizens to invest within Africa. “If my son in Congo wants to invest in Ghana, we should make it easier for him,” he stated.
The meeting also provided an opportunity for Minister Bouya to formally invite Otumfuo to a summit of 14 African Heads of State, scheduled for October 1, 2024, in Brazzaville, Congo.
Chaired by Presidents Félix Tshisekedi of Congo and William Ruto of Kenya, the summit will focus on strategies to leverage Africa’s resources for sustainable development. Ghana’s President Akufo-Addo is also expected to attend.
Minister Bouya, accompanied by staff from the Congolese Consulate in Ghana, presented traditional symbolic gifts to Otumfuo and toured the Manhyia Palace Museum ahead of the summit.
