The Accra Regional Police Command has shot and killed a suspected armed robber during a gunfight at Galoway near Agbogbloshie in Accra, recovering an AK-47 rifle and 186 rounds of ammunition.
The incident occurred on Thursday, September 10, 2026, after the Police received intelligence that four armed men travelling on two motorbikes were heading towards the Shell Filling Station near Agbogbloshie in connection with a planned robbery operation.
A team from the Accra Regional Police Intelligence and Professional Standards Directorate (PID), assisted by the Operational Unit, proceeded to the area to intercept the suspects.
According to the Police, the team encountered the suspected robbers at the Galoway Police Barrier, where an exchange of gunfire ensued.
One of the suspects was shot during the confrontation, while the remaining three suspects abandoned their motorbikes and fled into the area.
The injured suspect was found with an AK-47 assault rifle, serial number 79-HF-3014, fitted with a double magazine containing 136 rounds of AK-47 ammunition.
Police also recovered an additional 50 rounds of 9mm ammunition, bringing the total ammunition recovered to 186 rounds.
The suspect was rushed to the Police Hospital for medical attention but was pronounced dead on arrival. His body has since been deposited at the Police Hospital Mortuary pending identification and autopsy.
Two unregistered motorbikes, identified as a Royal and an Apsonic, were also recovered and have been retained, together with the firearm and ammunition, as exhibits for further investigations.
The Accra Regional Police Command said efforts were underway to identify and apprehend the three remaining suspects and establish the full circumstances surrounding the planned robbery operation.
The Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property and said it would continue to conduct intelligence-led operations against armed robbery and other violent crimes.
