In a major policy address, President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to education as the cornerstone of national progress.
Highlighting key initiatives aimed at strengthening the country’s education sector, the President unveiled a series of measures to ensure equitable and quality learning opportunities for all Ghanaians.
Speaking on the government’s priorities, President Mahama announced plans to sustain and enhance the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy, which he described as critical to achieving its intended benefits. He emphasized the need to address challenges such as overcrowding in schools to improve the quality of education at all levels.
As part of efforts to broaden access to higher education, President Mahama revealed plans to introduce free tuition for first-year students in three public tertiary institutions. Additionally, his government intends to complete abandoned education infrastructure projects, including school blocks, to accommodate more students and improve the learning environment.
President Mahama stressed the importance of equipping the youth with skills to thrive in a rapidly changing world. He announced plans to boost investments in technical and vocational education and training (TVET), with a focus on producing skilled manpower to meet the demands of business and industry.
“We will place significant emphasis on vocational education and training to ensure that we produce the skilled workforce needed to drive business and industry forward,” he stated.
To ensure the sustainability of these reforms, President Mahama disclosed the establishment of a planning committee tasked with organizing a National Education Review Conference. The conference, he noted, will evaluate the country’s education system, from kindergarten through basic, secondary, tertiary, and technical vocational education levels.
“This conference will thoroughly review our education system to identify challenges and opportunities for improvement,” the President added.
President Mahama’s ambitious plans underscore his administration’s dedication to transforming education into a catalyst for national development and empowering the youth with the tools they need to excel in the global economy.
