The Public Utilities Workers Union (PUWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC-GH) has raised concerns over the government’s renewed efforts to privatize the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
According to PUWU, the Ministry of Energy has set up a committee to advance the privatization agenda, a move the union says it is determined to resist.
In a statement issued to all divisions, branches, and locals of ECG, PUWU General Secretary Timothy Nyame emphasized that the union has not been consulted as a key stakeholder in the matter.
He assured members of the union’s unwavering commitment to protecting their interests and opposing any attempts to privatize ECG.
“As indicated earlier and in our press statement to the media, we would like to assure our members of our resolve to resist any attempt by the government to privatise ECG,” the statement read.
“Members are kindly requested to remain calm while we take appropriate steps towards achieving our goal. All should be on standby for any further direction.”
PUWU has reiterated its solidarity among members and called on them to stay united as the union prepares to engage with relevant authorities. It also urged members to remain on alert for further updates as the situation unfolds.
The statement was copied to key stakeholders, including the Secretary General of the TUC-GH, the National Chairman of PUWU, and other senior representatives of the union.
The planned privatization of ECG has been a contentious issue in recent years, with labor unions and stakeholders expressing concerns about the potential impact on workers and the delivery of public utility services.
PUWU’s strong stance highlights ongoing labor resistance to privatization efforts, as the union prepares to take further actions to safeguard its members’ interests.
