In a dramatic turn of events, the government of President John Dramani Mahama has sacked the Registrar of the Health Facilities Regulatory Agency (HeFRA), Dr. Philip Yaw Bannor, with immediate effect.
The dismissal comes in the wake of Ghana’s new government assuming power, signaling a potential shake-up in key public offices.
Dr. Bannor, a prominent figure within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), is no stranger to the political spotlight. In 2020, he contested the NPP’s internal parliamentary primaries in Kumawu, Ashanti Region, but was defeated by the late Philip Basoah.
Known for his unwavering confidence, sources close to Dr. Bannor revealed that as recently as today, he was adamant that his position was secure and claimed he could not be removed prematurely.
However, reality struck when an official termination letter was handed to him by the government of President John Dramani Mahama.
Dr. Bannor had reportedly argued that he could not be forcibly removed from office unless his contract ends in 2027.
“My contract ends in July 2027 and the NDC must respect that. No one can forcefully remove me unless my contract end in 2027”, he allegedly told close associates.
Moreover, Dr. Bannor had expressed his confidence in President Mahama’s commitment to upholding the rule of law, stating that the President would not take any action against him while he was still under a legally binding contract signed by the previous government.
“I know President Mahama is a law bidding citizen and will not do anything to a citizen who is under a legal contract by the previous government”.
