The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has highlighted the need to strategically site a proposed cashew processing plant in Sampa, located in the Jaman North District, citing its central role in Ghana’s cashew production value chain.
According to the minister, the Bono Region remains the leading hub for cashew cultivation in the country, with a significant proportion of local farmers engaged in the production of the crop. He noted that the government is prioritizing agro-industrialization as part of efforts to add value to raw agricultural produce and boost rural economies.
The development follows an indication by Sentuo Group Limited of its intention to establish a modern cashew processing facility in the region. The minister welcomed the move, describing it as timely and aligned with Ghana’s broader agenda of reducing post-harvest losses and increasing export earnings through value addition.
He emphasized that locating the facility in Sampa would provide critical logistical advantages due to its proximity to major cashew-producing communities. “Siting the plant closer to the farmers will reduce transportation costs, improve efficiency, and ensure that the benefits of the industry remain within the local economy,” he said.
Mr. Opoku further stated that the initiative is expected to create employment opportunities for the youth, support smallholder farmers, and stimulate economic growth in the district. He reiterated government’s commitment to supporting private sector investments that enhance agro-processing and strengthen agricultural value chains.
In recent engagements, the minister has consistently underscored the importance of transitioning Ghana from a raw commodity exporter to a value-added economy. He pointed to similar interventions in cocoa, rice, and maize production, where increased processing capacity is being pursued to maximize national revenue and improve farmer incomes.
The proposed cashew processing plant, if realized, is expected to significantly contribute to Ghana’s industrialization drive while positioning the Bono Region as a key player in the global cashew market.
