President John Dramani Mahama has revealed that the government will soon hand over the management of the national sanitation budget to individual districts.
This move aims to empower local authorities to take full charge of their sanitation needs.
Speaking at a durbar held at the Old Ghanata Astroturf in Dodowa during his ongoing ‘Thank You Tour,’ President Mahama said the Cabinet will meet shortly to approve the decentralisation plan.
This, President Mahama believes once approved, each district will be responsible for handling its sanitation challenges independently.
He said “Cabinet will soon meet on decentralising the sanitation budget to make every district responsible for its own sanitation”.
Again, President Mahama announced the revival of the National Sanitation Day programme.
“Cleanliness will become a key performance indicator for Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs). Their performance in maintaining sanitation will determine whether they stay in office or are removed,” President Mahama explained.
According to him, the initiative will now be a legally supported and well-funded monthly.
“Now that MMDCE has been nominated and confirmed we will begin our National sanitation day every month. This will be a revive monthly exercise involving all Ghanaians”
“This time it will not be a symbolic event, it will be legally backed, properly funded, and it will be operationalised through partnerships with local assemblies and private sector providers,”he stated.
