The National Concerned Small Scale Miners Association, Ghana, has disassociated itself from a press statement circulating in the media that accuses two senior officials of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) of forming an illegal anti-galamsey taskforce.
The controversial statement, dated July 9, 2025, alleged that NDC National Organizer Joseph Yammin and the party’s 3rd Vice Chairperson Yakubu Abanga were behind the creation of a taskforce extorting money and harassing small-scale miners.
However, in a press release issued on Saturday, the President of the National Concerned Small Scale Miners Association, Michael Kwadwo Peprah, denied any involvement with the said document and described the claims as fabricated and misleading.
“The leadership of the National Concerned Small Scale Miners Association, Ghana, wishes to unequivocally disassociate itself from a press statement purportedly issued by a group calling itself the Concern Small Scale Miners Association,” the statement read.
The association further clarified that its checks revealed the so-called Concern Small Scale Miners Association is not registered with any recognized authority. It also pointed out that the phone number (0244-254-238) listed on the disputed press release is inactive, raising doubts about the credibility of its origin.
The alleged statement was reportedly signed by one Andrew Abban, who claims to be chairman of the unregistered group. The National Concerned Small Scale Miners Association emphasized that it has no knowledge of such a person or association.
“Ordinarily, we would have ignored such baseless allegations. However, due to the numerous calls and media inquiries received by our office, we find it necessary to clarify the matter publicly,” Peprah stated.
The association described the document as a “calculated attempt to mislead the public and incite confusion within the small-scale mining community,” and called on the public and media to disregard the statement entirely.
Efforts to trace the origin of the disputed press release are ongoing.
