Tensions flared at the Ashanti Regional office of the Forestry Commission this morning after more than 15 fully armed men believed to be operatives of the National Security stormed the premises, disrupting official business.
According to eyewitnesses and commission staff, the men claimed they were acting on “orders from above” to shut down the office and confiscate its keys.
The reason for the operation remains unclear, but sources within the commission suspect it may be linked to recent crackdowns on illegal mining activities within the Oda River Forest Reserve.
Forestry Commission officials have reportedly faced threats in recent weeks following a series of arrests targeting illegal miners operating within protected areas.
In a swift response, the Ashanti Regional Security Liaison Officer, Captain (Rtd.) John Kwame Jabari, ordered the Ashanti Regional Police Command to arrest a group of individuals described as NDC foot soldiers, who were allegedly involved in hijacking the commission’s office.
Speaking to Starr News, Ashanti regional Correspondent Isaac Justice Bediako earlier Captain Jabari strongly refuted claims that the armed men were affiliated with the National Security.
“These individuals are not National Security operatives. We are investigating their true identities and their motives. Thy are our party boys and we will deal with them. Their illegal activities took place at Offinso, Asante Bekwai and Nkawie all in the Ashanti region,” Captain Jabari stated in a phone interview.
He said “ I understand they are members of the NDC foot soldier their actions is pure criminal and I have told the police to arrested’’ he said.
deputy national security coordinator of the Ashanti regional Ivan Bilson Yeboah also confirmed the situation has been brought under control at Asante Bekwai where he was assign to go and deal with the situation.
Authorities have yet to officially confirm whether the group acted under any legitimate directive.
Meanwhile, operations at the Forestry Commission office have been suspended temporarily as investigations continue.
