The United States has condemned a deadly attack in Nigeria’s Kwara State that reportedly killed more than 160 people, with authorities still working to confirm the full death toll and account for those missing.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the U.S. Mission in Nigeria described the incident as a “horrific attack” and expressed condolences to the families and communities affected by what it called senseless violence. The mission noted that many victims remain unaccounted for as investigations and rescue efforts continue.
The statement welcomed Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive to deploy security forces to protect affected villages in the area. It also commended the president’s instruction to federal and state authorities to provide aid to impacted communities.
U.S. officials further urged that those responsible for the attack be brought to justice, emphasizing accountability as a key step toward restoring security and preventing future violence.
Nigerian authorities have not yet released an official casualty figure, and details surrounding the attack remain limited as security operations and humanitarian responses continue in the region.
