A senior lecturer at the University of Ghana, Professor Martin Oteng Ababio, has expressed concern over the adverse effects of the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy, stating that it has worsened existing challenges in Ghana’s education system.
Speaking at a media briefing during a campaign outreach organized by lecturers to promote the National Democratic Congress (NDC) 2024 manifesto, Prof. Ababio highlighted that while the policy has significantly increased university enrollment, the government has failed to address the pressing need for improved infrastructure in tertiary institutions.
“The Free SHS has brought benefits, but it has also undermined the quality of education,” Prof. Ababio stated.
“We now have lecture halls crammed with 600 to 800 students, making it nearly impossible to provide personalized attention and maintain academic standards. Lecturers, classrooms, and residential facilities have not been expanded to meet the growing numbers.”
Prof. Ababio commended the NDC’s proposal to review the Free SHS policy, emphasizing the need to balance access to education with the quality of learning.
