The Upper Denkyira West Member of Parliament, Redolf Amoako Gyampo, has voiced strong support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
Speaking in Twifo Praso during Dr. Bawumia’s one-day engagement with former constituency executives and former government officials in the Central Region, Amoako Gyampo urged the party to maintain unity and continue backing a candidate who has already been widely accepted by Ghanaians.
Amoako Gyampo emphasized that the NPP should not single out Dr. Bawumia for the party’s defeat in the 2024 elections.
He stressed that all party members share responsibility for the loss and called for collective accountability.
“All of us contributed to our defeat, so if we are preparing to win in 2028, why blame Dr. Bawumia alone for the 2024 loss?” he questioned. He further added, “We need to be bold and acknowledge that we are all part of what happened, but what matters now is unity and focusing on regaining power in 2028.”
The MP highlighted the progress made under Dr. Bawumia, noting that the party previously secured 41 percent of the vote but fell short by just 9 percent in the last election.
He cautioned against discarding a candidate who has been sufficiently marketed and accepted by the electorate, warning that such a move could undermine the party’s chances of winning future elections.
The MP remarked “And when we went to the election, we had 41%, leaving just 9% to be victorious. Yet, they say we should remove that person, start afresh, pick a different candidate, and market him. What that would say is that, as a party, we are not meant to win elections.
“What I am pleading with everyone is to continue to have trust in His Excellency Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia,” Amoako Gyampo concluded.
