The Women’s Network for Peace Ghana (WNPG) has strongly condemned recent calls by the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), former President John Dramani Mahama, for demonstrations against the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana.
The WNPG describes the call as “inappropriate and counterproductive,” warning that it undermines the integrity of Ghana’s electoral process and promotes unnecessary distrust in the EC’s impartiality and effectiveness.
In a statement signed by Ms. Akua Achiaa, Executive Director of the WNPG, the organization expressed concern over the potential negative impact of such demonstrations on the stability of the country’s democracy.
The EC, the statement emphasized, is a key institution responsible for ensuring free, fair, and transparent elections in Ghana, and public confidence in its work is crucial.
“We unequivocally condemn this action and urge all political parties and stakeholders to refrain from making statements that could incite disaffection and cast doubt on the credibility of the EC,” the statement read. It further noted that eroding confidence in the EC would not only destabilize the electoral process but also jeopardize the broader democratic framework of the country.
The WNPG called on all political actors to use established legal and institutional channels to address any grievances they may have, urging them to avoid public demonstrations that could destabilize the electoral environment. “The integrity of our electoral process hinges on collective support and respect for the institutions that uphold it,” the statement added.
As a final appeal, the WNPG reiterated its commitment to promoting a peaceful and fair electoral environment in Ghana. The organization called on all stakeholders to join in fostering mutual respect and constructive dialogue as the country prepares for upcoming elections.
The statement concluded with a call for unity, stressing that only through cooperative efforts can the voice of the people be duly represented in a fair and transparent democratic process.
