Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi Bosiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has defended his decision to openly support Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s bid to become the party’s flagbearer, despite his role as a regional chairman, which traditionally requires neutrality.
In an interview on Dwaso Nsem with Omanhene Kwabena Asante on Adom FM monitored by Kumasimail, Wontumi explained that his endorsement reflects the views of the grassroots members in the Ashanti Region.
He emphasized that his support is grounded in what he has heard and seen from the local party base.
“I am taking a side in this contest because it is the right thing to do,” Wontumi said firmly. “As it is written in Acts chapter 2:42, the apostles upheld their doctrines and teachings. Similarly, when the NDC was in opposition, their regional chairmen went to the Volta Region during the Akwasi Botchwey report.”
Wontumi stressed that, as a regional chairman, his actions are informed by the sentiments of party members in his jurisdiction.
“What the majority of the grassroots are saying is that we should present Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia as the flagbearer,” he stated.
He further advised other aspirants contesting against Bawumia to reconsider their campaigns.
“Those who are contesting him should save their money because if Dr. Bawumia wins, they can use that support to help secure victory in the 2028 general election,” Wontumi added.
