A violent clash between two rival youth groups at Akyem Segyimase near Kyebi in the Abuakwa South Municipality , Eastern Region has left several people injured, prompting a swift joint operation by the military and police to restore calm.
The incident, which began last Thursday, was reportedly triggered when a suspected drug addict from a local ghetto assaulted a resident, accusing him of flirting with his girlfriend.
The victim allegedly mobilized some townsfolk to retaliate, leading to a free-for-all fight between the ghetto boys and the town youth.
Eyewitnesses say some of the rioters brandished guns and machetes, with gunshots fired during the confrontations.
The clashes persisted for days, forcing many residents to flee until Sunday when a combined team of military and police personnel stormed the community.
Three suspects were arrested in the operation, while security agencies continue to pursue the alleged ringleader, identified as “Okyeman Rasta.”
Assembly Member for Segyimase, who confirmed the incident, said he appealed for military and police intervention to restore law and order.
“The community is calm for now, while the injured are receiving treatment at the Kibi Government Hospital,” he noted, adding that police are preparing to arraign the suspects before court.
