Mounting tensions between residents of Mpatuam and Asanko Mines security forces have erupted into violence, leaving one assembly member fear dead and two others injured in the Amansie West District.
The unrest, which began after residents accused the mine’s security of killing a illegal miner on Monday, September 8, spiraled into a full-blown confrontation the following day when community members blocked key roads in protest.
Witnesses say the demonstration quickly turned chaotic as soldiers deployed to the area clashed with the aggrieved youth.
Shots were fired, resulting in the death of Samuel Danquah, the Assembly Member for Aboabo, and injuries to two others who are now receiving treatment at a hospital.
In retaliation, enraged residents reportedly set fire to vehicles belonging to Asanko Mines, intensifying fears of further violence in the area.
Speaking to Kumasi Mail, the Assembly Member for Mpatuam, Kwame Sakyi, described the situation as “out of hand,” adding that the community feels increasingly marginalized and unsafe.
“The people believe their colleague was killed by mine security, and now we have lost another respected leader. The youth are demanding justice and accountability,” he said.
The deadly clash underscores the deep-rooted tensions between mining companies and host communities in the Ashanti Region, where disputes over land use, environmental degradation, and allegations of human rights abuses have fueled mistrust.
Observers note that while mining brings economic benefits, the lack of dialogue and transparent conflict-resolution mechanisms often leaves communities feeling sidelined. Protests, sometimes violent, have become the last resort for locals seeking redress.
Local leaders and opinion leaders are appealing for calm as fears mount that the violence could spread. Civil society groups are also calling on both the government and Asanko Mines to investigate the circumstances leading to the deaths and injuries, while ensuring justice for victims.
For now, Mpatuam remains on edge, with security forces deployed and residents vowing to continue pressing for answers.
