Government has reiterated its commitment to strengthening the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) to improve its capacity to respond effectively to fire emergencies across the country.
The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, disclosed that government, through the Interior Ministry, has begun processes to procure 100 new fire tenders nationwide to enhance fire response operations.
Dr. Amoakohene made this known during a visit to victims of a devastating fire that destroyed several vehicle mechanic shops at Sofoline in Kumasi on Sunday evening.
The fire, which broke out at about 7:00 p.m. on January 25, 2026, swept through 24 mechanic shops, destroying at least 39 vehicles and leaving shop owners and vehicle owners counting their losses.
Eyewitnesses told reporters that personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service arrived several minutes after the fire had started, by which time it had already intensified. Firefighters struggled to bring the blaze under control but eventually managed to prevent it from spreading to nearby facilities.
Some affected artisans suspect the fire may have been caused by refuse burning in the area. One of the victims, Master Kofi Musah, who lost a vehicle in the fire, recounted how the blaze started and the rapid manner in which it spread through the area.
During his visit, Dr. Amoakohene commiserated with the victims and assured them of government support, stressing that efforts were underway to retool the Fire Service to avert similar incidents in the future.
Members of the public have, however, questioned why the Ghana National Fire Service station located about 400 meters from the scene did not have a functional fire tender at the time of the incident. Addressing the concerns, the Ashanti Regional Minister explained the circumstances surrounding the situation and reiterated government’s commitment to improving fire-fighting logistics.
Speaking on behalf of the victims, Master Kofi Musah expressed appreciation to government for the visit and words of encouragement, adding that the affected artisans were hopeful that the assurances given would be fulfilled.
