A devastating accident early this morning, Sunday, October 13, 2024, claimed the lives of 13 people when a VIP bus traveling from Kumasi to Enchi in the Western North Region veered off the road and plunged into a ditch near Kwapia, close to Obuasi.
Police sources confirmed that among the deceased were seven males, five females, and one child, all passengers aboard the bus.
Reports indicate that all but one of the victims died instantly at the scene. The driver, identified as Osei Adu, was rushed to the hospital but sadly passed away shortly after his arrival due to the severity of his injuries.
The incident has left the local community in shock, with families grieving the sudden loss of their loved ones. According to eyewitnesses, the bus, which was registered with the number ER 2445-11, had become overloaded after picking up several stranded passengers from another bus that had broken down earlier on the route.
It is believed that tensions arose among some passengers over the overcrowded conditions, potentially distracting the driver and contributing to the fatal crash.
In the aftermath of the accident, those injured are receiving medical treatment, while police have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash.
The bodies of the deceased have been sent to the morgue as authorities work to gather more details and offer support to the bereaved families.
