Five people have died and a driver has been left in critical condition following a road crash involving a trailer loaded with cement in the Kwahu area of Ghana’s Eastern Region.
The accident occurred at about 06:14 GMT on Monday when the trailer, which was transporting bags of cement to Kotoso in the Kwahu East District, reportedly suffered a brake failure and overturned.
The Ghana National Fire Service said the five victims, believed to be passengers on board the vehicle, died instantly at the scene.
The driver sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving treatment at the Kwahu Government Hospital.
The Public Relations Officer for the service in the Kwahu South Municipal area, Sylvia Apoya, said the driver was only able to provide limited information due to his critical condition.
She said the driver told medical personnel it was his first time working with the “loading boys” who were travelling with him and who were among those killed in the crash.
Because of the driver’s condition, authorities have not yet been able to establish where the cement was loaded from.
However, relatives from Obomeng and Mpraeso have since identified the bodies of the victims.
Officials say investigations are ongoing and more details will be provided as they emerge.
