Five Chinese nationals, including one female, have been arrested for their alleged involvement in illegal mining activities (galamsey) in the Eastern Region.
The suspects were arrested by the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) in collaboration with the Eastern Regional National Security Office during a special intelligence-led operation in the Birim Central Municipality.

The operation was carried out lastnight following credible intelligence indicating that the suspects were actively engaged in illegal mining activities on the Birim River
The team set ablaze the mining equipment on the river.

The arrested suspects are currently in custody and are expected to be handed over to the appropriate authorities for further investigations.
Eastern Regional National Security Laison officer Francis Annoh -Dompreh reiterated commitment of the security agencies to intensifying operations across mining hotspots in the region to clamp down on illegal mining to sustain gains made in the fight to protect water bodies, farmlands, and the environment.

He warned both foreign nationals and locals involved in galamsey to desist from the illegal practice or face the full rigours of the law.
