The Member of Parliament for Ejisu, Kwabena Boateng, has assured cocoa farmers that a future administration led by Mahamudu Bawumia will prioritize their welfare and ensure fair treatment across the agricultural sector.
Speaking during an engagement with farmers in the Manso Adubia and Manso Nkwanta areas on Wednesday, the legislator said Dr. Bawumia’s leadership would be anchored on integrity, fairness, and policies aimed at improving livelihoods in farming communities.
Mr. Boateng stated that despite global economic disruptions, including the COVID-19 pandemic, the current administration maintained support for cocoa farmers and agricultural workers.
“Even in challenging times, government ensured that cocoa farmers did not see their livelihoods compromised,” he said.
Highlighting the New Patriotic Party’s track record, the Ejisu MP pointed to what he described as consistent efforts to improve cocoa pricing under the administration of Nana Akufo-Addo.
He noted that upon assuming office in 2017, the government increased cocoa prices from GH₵450 to over GH₵550 per bag, followed by subsequent annual increments.
According to him, a significant milestone was reached in the 2023/2024 cocoa season, when the price per bag was set at GH₵3,100.
Mr. Boateng added that beyond price adjustments, the government provided extension services and fertilizer support to farmers to enhance productivity.
The legislator also criticized the National Democratic Congress, accusing it of failing to deliver on promises made to farmers.
He referenced what he described as unfulfilled commitments on cocoa pricing and alleged inconsistencies in policy implementation.
“It is disheartening to see promises made to farmers not materialize,” he said, urging stakeholders to scrutinize political pledges carefully.
Mr. Boateng urged cocoa farmers to consider what he described as the “track record” of the New Patriotic Party when making electoral decisions, particularly as political campaigning intensifies ahead of future elections.
The remarks come at a time when cocoa pricing and farmer welfare remain central to political discourse in Ghana, with both major parties seeking to strengthen support within cocoa-growing communities.
Analysts say the sector will continue to play a critical role in shaping voter sentiment as the country approaches its next electoral cycle.
