In a dramatic revelation, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of orchestrating a secret plot to undermine the NPP’s chances in the Ashanti Region ahead of the 2024 general elections.
According to Wontumi, the NDC is allegedly sponsoring independent candidates in a strategic move to split the NPP’s votes, thereby gaining an advantage in the crucial electoral region.
Wontumi made these claims during a campaign rally in the Asante Akyem North Constituency on Wednesday, August 21, 2024.
He described the NDC’s actions as “desperate and cunning,” and urged all independent candidates in the region to reject any offers from the NDC and align themselves with the NPP instead.
“This is a clear attempt by the NDC to destabilize the NPP’s stronghold by dividing our votes. I want to urge all independent candidates to see through these tactics and join forces with us to ensure a decisive victory in December,” Wontumi declared.
The revelation has caused a stir in Ghana’s political circles, with many critics denouncing the alleged NDC strategy as unethical and contrary to democratic principles.
The NPP leadership has pledged to remain vigilant and take necessary measures to safeguard the party’s interests in the Ashanti Region, a key battleground in the upcoming elections.
Wontumi’s allegations add a new layer of tension to the already heated political atmosphere as both major parties gear up for the 2024 polls.
The Ashanti Region, traditionally a stronghold of the NPP, is expected to play a pivotal role in determining the outcome of the elections.
The NDC has yet to officially respond to these accusations, but the claims have further intensified the political rivalry between the two parties as they vie for dominance in Ghana’s most populous region.
