The Andani Royal Family has announced that the late Overlord of Dagbon, His Royal Majesty Yaa-Naa Abubakari Mahama II, has been laid to rest following the completion of the sacred traditional rites prescribed by the customs of the Dagbon Kingdom.
In a statement issued on Monday by Andani Royal Family TV, the Royal Gate of the late King said all customary rites had been duly observed before the revered monarch was buried at Katina, the royal mausoleum reserved for the burial of Yaa-Naas.
The announcement marks another significant milestone in the solemn transition following the death of the revered King, whose passing was formally proclaimed earlier in the day through traditional gunfire, royal drumming and the ceremonial activities of the Sapashini (warriors) at the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi.
Reflecting on the life and reign of the late monarch, the Royal Family described Yaa-Naa Abubakari Mahama II as “a revered father, a wise leader and a custodian of our rich heritage,” whose wisdom, humility and unwavering commitment to the peace and unity of Dagbon would forever be remembered.
The family noted that his leadership left an enduring legacy that would continue to inspire generations of Dagombas and all who admired his dedication to preserving the kingdom’s cherished traditions while promoting reconciliation and harmony.
As the Kingdom continues to mourn, the Royal Family called on the faithful to remember the late Yaa-Naa in their prayers, asking Almighty Allah to forgive his shortcomings, envelop him in His boundless mercy, illuminate his grave and grant him the highest place in Jannatul Firdaus.
The statement also prayed for strength, patience and comfort for the Royal Family, the Chiefs and Elders of Dagbon and the entire people of the Kingdom as they navigate one of the most profound moments in the history of the ancient traditional state.
With the late King’s burial now completed, attention will gradually turn to the remaining customary funeral rites under the supervision of the newly installed Kampakuya-Naa, who serves as Regent of Dagbon until a successor is selected and enskinned in accordance with the customs and traditions of the Kingdom.
The passing of Yaa-Naa Abubakari Mahama II has drawn an outpouring of grief across northern Ghana and beyond, with many remembering him as a monarch whose reign was marked by humility, reconciliation and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of Dagbon.
