The Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed his condolences to the chiefs and people of the Dagbon Kingdom following the death of His Royal Majesty Ndan Yaa-Naa Abukari Mahama II, describing him as a symbol of peace, unity and wise leadership.
In a condolence message issued on Monday, July 13, Dr Bawumia said the late Yaa-Naa steered the Dagbon Kingdom through one of the most challenging periods in its history with wisdom, patience and dedication.
“It is with grief that I send my sincere condolences to the Chiefs and people of the Dagbon Kingdom on the passing of Ndan Yaa-Naa Abukari Mahama II,” he said.
Dr Bawumia noted that the late overlord emerged as King of Dagbon at a critical moment in the kingdom’s history and played a pivotal role in fostering reconciliation and stability.
According to him, although the late Yaa-Naa’s reign was relatively short, it left a lasting impact on the kingdom through efforts to unite families, heal divisions and promote development.
“He represented a blend of tradition and modernity perfectly in the way he led Dagbon. He constantly advocated for and lobbied for major developmental projects in Dagbon,” the statement said.
Reflecting on their personal relationship, Dr Bawumia said he benefited immensely from the counsel of the late Yaa-Naa during his tenure as Vice-President and later as the NPP’s presidential candidate.
He described visits to the Gbewaa Palace as an honour, saying they afforded him the opportunity to draw from the late King’s wisdom and guidance.
Dr Bawumia said the passing of Yaa-Naa Abukari Mahama II was a great loss not only to the Dagbon Kingdom but also to Ghana.
He prayed for Allah’s comfort for the immediate family of the late overlord, the chiefs and people of Dagbon, and the nation as a whole during the period of mourning.
Yaa-Naa Abukari Mahama II was enskinned as Overlord of Dagbon in January 2019 following the implementation of the Dagbon Peace Roadmap, which ended years of chieftaincy disputes and restored stability to the kingdom.
His reign has been widely credited with consolidating peace and promoting development in Dagbon.
