New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer for the 2028 presidential election, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has called for a paradigm shift in Ghana’s healthcare policies following an engagement with the National Executive Committee of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA).
Dr. Bawumia said the meeting, held at the GMA House at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, formed part of his ongoing consultations with key stakeholders and identifiable groups across the country.
According to him, the discussions with GMA President, Professor (Dr.) Ernest Yorke, and members of the association’s executive leadership provided insights into a range of challenges confronting medical doctors and Ghana’s healthcare system.
Among the issues discussed were the retention of health professionals, remuneration, the uneven distribution of medical doctors across the country, healthcare infrastructure, emergency preparedness and conditions of service.
Other matters raised included deprived-area allowances, the role of the private sector in healthcare delivery, and the requirement by the Medical and Dental Council for doctors to undertake licensing examinations.
Dr. Bawumia said the engagement had strengthened his conviction that significant changes were needed in the country’s approach to healthcare policy.
“Following our discussions, I am convinced that a paradigm shift is needed in our health care policies,” he said in a statement posted on his Facebook page.
He said several ideas were presented during the engagement and expressed optimism that their implementation could have a transformative impact on the welfare of doctors and the broader health sector.
Dr. Bawumia further described healthcare delivery as a collaborative effort and commended the leadership and members of the GMA for their contributions to discussions on improving healthcare in Ghana.
He said the consultations would contribute to efforts to build what he described as a “robust, resilient, and patient-centered healthcare system” capable of serving communities across the country.
The engagement comes as Dr. Bawumia continues consultations with various stakeholders ahead of the 2028 general election.
