The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has announced plans to clear traders, garage operators, businesses and other occupants from the Abrepo Junction area from Thursday, October 8, 2026, to make way for preparatory works on Phase 1 of the Suame Interchange Project.
The Assembly said affected persons have until Sunday, October 4, to voluntarily vacate the designated project area.
In a statement issued on October 1, the KMA warned that a designated demolition and enforcement team would begin removing unauthorised structures, goods, equipment, building materials and other items left behind after the deadline.
The move is linked to the progress of Phase 2 of the Suame Interchange Project, which the Assembly said is currently 87% complete and is expected to open to traffic in October.
With Phase 2 nearing completion, preparatory activities for Phase 1 are expected to intensify. The first phase will include the construction of a three-tier interchange at Suame, two overpasses at Abrepo and Krofrom Junctions, and the widening of the Eastern and Western Bypass Roads.
At Abrepo, the initial works will focus on relocating utility infrastructure and preparing the corridor for traffic management. The affected facilities include pipelines belonging to the Ghana Water Company Limited and electricity infrastructure operated by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
The KMA said the affected occupants had previously been engaged and notified about the need to relocate voluntarily.
It reiterated that October 4 is the final deadline for voluntary relocation, with enforcement scheduled to begin four days later.
The Assembly also cautioned occupants against leaving their belongings behind after the deadline, saying it would not accept responsibility for any loss or damage to items remaining within the project area.
For traders seeking alternative locations, the KMA has directed them to the Racecourse Market. Garage operators have also been advised to contact the Works Engineer at the Racecourse Market for assistance in identifying suitable relocation sites.
The planned clearance marks another step toward the implementation of the first phase of the interchange project, as authorities prepare the Abrepo corridor for construction activities.
