The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is set to open nominations on November 1 for individuals seeking to contest its parliamentary seats ahead of the 2028 general elections.
The exercise is expected to pave the way for internal contests across constituencies as the largest opposition party intensifies preparations to reclaim political ground and improve its parliamentary representation.
Addressing the media, the party’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, said the process forms part of efforts to secure more parliamentary seats and defeat the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2028 general elections.
Mr. Kodua indicated that sitting Members of Parliament would also be eligible to participate in the primaries, allowing them to seek renewed mandates from their respective constituencies.
He further stressed that the party would not impose parliamentary candidates on constituencies, insisting that the eventual candidates would emerge through the outcome of the primaries.
The nomination process is expected to trigger competition among aspirants seeking to represent the NPP in Parliament, while placing the party’s internal cohesion and grassroots support under renewed scrutiny.
The primaries will also serve as a critical test of the party’s ability to manage internal competition, maintain unity among supporters and rebuild its electoral fortunes ahead of the crucial 2028 general elections.
As the process unfolds, attention will turn to the party leadership’s vision for the upcoming contest and the extent to which the primaries can strengthen its grassroots structures.
A political analyst is also expected to assess whether the internal electoral process can promote unity within the party and position the NPP for a stronger performance in 2028.
