Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has challenged contractors working on the €50 million La General Hospital project to accelerate construction, insisting the January 2028 commissioning deadline can still be met.
“We can speed up so that we can beat the deadline,” he said during an inspection of the project, while urging contractors to match progress on site with the urgency of delivering the hospital.
Mr Akandoh dismissed payment delays as an excuse for slow progress, saying government had been paying contractors on time.
He disclosed that the latest interim payment certificate had been submitted and forwarded to the Ministry of Finance.

The minister also called for a review of the proposed capacity of the hospital’s emergency department to ensure it can adequately serve patients and help address shortages of emergency beds.
The €50 million project includes the supply and installation of medical equipment.
Mr Akandoh pledged continued monitoring of construction until the facility is completed and operational.
