Five people are feared dead after a mining pit collapsed on them at an illegal mining site in Mpasatia, a community in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region.
The victims were trapped in the pit for several hours on Tuesday, April 1, 2025 while mining on river . Their identities have not yet been disclosed.
Nana Nkansah local reporter confirmed that two of the victims have been retrieved and pronounced dead at Afari Hospital.
The remaining three are still trapped under heaps of sand, making rescue efforts difficult. Residents and security agencies are working tirelessly to retrieve them.
Meanwhile, the bodies of the two deceased miners have been deposited at the morgue, awaiting identification by family members.
