The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) have announced a major upgrade of power infrastructure in the Ashanti Region to enhance electricity supply reliability and meet rising demand.
As part of the initiative, the existing 66MVA transformer at the Anwomaso Bulk Supply Point (BSP) will be replaced with a 145MVA transformer. This upgrade is expected to significantly boost installed capacity, ensuring a more stable power supply, particularly during peak hours between 7 PM and 11 PM.
The current 66MVA transformer has been struggling to handle demand, frequently becoming overloaded during peak periods. The upgrade will more than double capacity, improving supply reliability across Kumasi and its surrounding areas.
Speaking to the media, Engineer Peter Kofi Fletcher emphasized the importance of the project in supporting both current and future electricity needs in the region.
“We are upgrading a transformer from 66MVA to 145MVA, which will expand electricity capacity in Kumasi to accommodate increasing demand. The existing system is constrained, and with rapid urban development, this expansion is essential,” he stated.
He also reaffirmed ECG’s commitment to enhancing service delivery and urged road and building contractors to consult ECG before commencing construction to avoid damaging underground power cables.
Additionally, he appealed to customers to pay their electricity bills on time to support ongoing infrastructure improvements and expansion efforts.
