Some top members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region, along with select national executives, have begun laying the groundwork to rally support for Kennedy Agyapong as the party’s next flagbearer.
The influential figures, including former Members of Parliament (MPs) and Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), are leading a door-to-door campaign urging the party’s grassroots to back Agyapong when the flagbearership race begins.
This move comes even before the party’s election review committee, led by Professor Mike Oquaye, concludes its investigation into the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 general elections.
However, the campaigners believe the committee’s final report will recommend that the party fields a new candidate other than the defeated former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
During recent meetings, the group has reportedly told party members that Bawumia faced rejection in the northern regions, Akan-dominated areas, and among Christian communities, making his chances of leading the party to victory in future elections uncertain.
According to them, should the NPP select Bawumia again as its flagbearer, the party risks remaining in opposition for over 12 years.
They are, therefore, urging party faithful to rally behind Kennedy Agyapong, whom they consider a stronger candidate capable of reclaiming power for the party.
The NPP is expected to hold internal elections in the coming months to elect a new flagbearer ahead of the 2028 general elections.
