The North East Regional Minister, Hon. Ibrahim Tia, has cut sod for the resumption of work on the long-abandoned Gambaga College of Education infrastructure project, marking a major step in government’s drive to complete stalled public projects in the education sector.
The project, which had remained dormant since 2016, is being revived in line with the National Democratic Congress government’s commitment to complete all abandoned projects nationwide. Hon. Tia said the decision underscores the resolve of His Excellency President John Mahama to restore confidence in public investments and expand access to quality teacher education.
“This project had been left untouched for close to a decade, and I am pleased that Gambaga College of Education has now been captured under the President’s national agenda to complete all abandoned projects,” he said.
Hon. Tia was joined at the sod-cutting ceremony by the Deputy Administrator of GETFund, Hon. Alhassan Sualihu Dandaawa, and officials of the Fund.
Gambaga College of Education is one of the 46 public colleges of education in Ghana. Located in Gambaga, the institution received its accreditation in 2013 and is affiliated to the University of Cape Coast, which oversees the external assessment of students and the award of the Diploma in Basic Education (DBE) to successful candidates.
The revived project includes the construction of a multipurpose lecture hall, student hostels, a model basic school, an administration block, and a Principal’s residence. These facilities are expected to address longstanding infrastructure deficits at the college.

“When completed, this complex will significantly improve teaching, learning and accommodation, especially as student intake continues to increase,” Hon. Tia noted.
The Regional Minister urged the contractor to deliver quality work and expedite construction to allow for the timely relocation of the institution to its permanent site.
“I have impressed upon the contractor the need for high-quality work and speedy execution to ensure this project is completed on schedule,” he said.
He further appealed to GETFund to ensure the timely release of funds to prevent delays.
“Prompt payment to the contractor is essential to guarantee smooth execution and the successful completion of the project,” Hon. Tia added.
Hon. Tia reaffirmed government’s commitment to strengthening education infrastructure, describing the project as a critical investment in teacher education and the future of the country.
