The Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), ADO1 Alex King Nartey, has clarified his recent comments regarding the conduct of Dr. Frank Amoakohene, the Ashanti Regional Minister during an interaction with firefighters at a fire scene.
In a statement, ADO1 Nartey expressed his respect and admiration for the Minister, particularly for his achievements as one of the youngest to hold the position.
However, he noted that his remarks were based on the belief that a different approach could have been used in addressing the firefighters, who had risked their lives for hours battling the blaze.
“I feel the approach of publicly criticizing them and filming the incident was not the best. Hence my comment that the shouting was ‘uncalled for,’” he explained.
Addressing past statements he had made against President John Dramani Mahama Akufo-Addo, ADO1 Nartey clarified that those were made before he joined the GNFS, at a time when he was expressing concerns as a “worried youth.”
He emphasized that in recent times, he has commended several initiatives by the President and remains non-partisan, stating, “I am not a member or a card-bearing member of any political party, and anyone with contrary evidence can come forward to prove me wrong.”
While apologizing if his remarks offended Dr. Amoakohene, he reaffirmed his stance that a more constructive approach could have been taken in engaging the firefighters.
“Firemen deserve better, and I am hopeful that your administration will be remembered for leading the drive to equip and retool the Ghana National Fire Service,” he concluded.
The Minister has yet to respond publicly to the statement.
