New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful and former Education Minister, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, has told delegates in the Ashanti Region that strong support from the party’s traditional base will be crucial in securing victory in the 2028 general elections.
Addressing delegates in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Constituency as part of his regional campaign tour, Dr Adutwum argued that electoral success is often influenced by home-region advantage rather than ethnic considerations.
“Home region advantage plays a very crucial role in elections worldwide. This is not about tribe. Even in the NDC, their research points to a victory for me and the NPP because of home region advantage,” he said.
The Bosomtwe MP dismissed suggestions that presidential aspirants must contest multiple times before winning, citing historical precedents to support his claim.
“Claims that people have to contest multiple times before they win elections are inaccurate. Dr Busia contested for the first time and won. Dr Hilla Limann also won in a fierce contest. Prof Adu Boahen, who contested once, was replaced by your own J.A. Kufuor. And so it happens,” he noted.
Dr Adutwum highlighted Ashanti Region’s pivotal contribution to the NPP’s electoral fortunes, recalling that the party received 80.5 percent of the presidential vote there during its first successful bid for power.
“If Ashanti Region, the party’s stronghold, gave the NPP 80.5 percent to become president, I, Dr Adutwum, can also do same as flagbearer of the party and we will secure victory,” he said.
As the campaign for the NPP flagbearer slot ahead of the 2026 primaries intensifies, Dr Adutwum is positioning himself as the candidate capable of combining a strong traditional base with what he describes as a “fresh narrative” to lead the party to succeed in 2028.
