Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has dismissed speculation that he intends to contest as an Independent Candidate or vie for the Keta parliamentary seat in the Volta Region.
His response comes after his recent donation of sewing machines and hair dryers to women in Tsiame, his hometown in the Volta Region, sparked public speculation about his political intentions in the area.
The gesture was part of his ongoing women empowerment initiative.
Addressing the rumors, Afenyo-Markin emphasized that his actions were purely motivated by a desire to support community development and not a signal of political ambition in the Volta Region.
“I am not contesting as an Independent Candidate, and I have no plans to stand as MP for Keta. I remain fully committed to serving the people of Effutu,” he clarified.
He urged the public to refrain from politicizing his development efforts, stating, “Let us not misinterpret my contribution to my hometown. Supporting community growth should not be viewed through a partisan lens.”
Afenyo-Markin also highlighted his strong ties to Tsiame, explaining that the donation was a personal gesture to give back to the community that raised him.
“This is my way of showing appreciation to my hometown, where my parents are from and where I was born. It is a simple contribution to support local women and their livelihoods,” he said.
He reaffirmed his commitment to his parliamentary duties in Effutu and encouraged unity and development across all communities, regardless of political affiliations.
“We must rise as one family and contribute to the progress of our respective communities,” he added.
The lawmaker’s comments aim to dispel ongoing speculation and refocus attention on the importance of non-partisan development efforts across the country.
