Afenyo-Markin denies reports he has been summoned over extortion allegations

Minority Leader says he called NPP MPs for routine caucus meeting ahead of Parliament’s reconvening

Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has denied reports that he has been summoned by members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Caucus over allegations of extortion.

In a statement posted on Facebook, Mr Afenyo-Markin described the report as misinformation and said no such summons had been issued against him.

“Your report that I have been summoned is untrue,” he stated.

According to the Minority Leader, the meeting involving members of the NPP Parliamentary Caucus was one he had convened as part of the caucus’ routine preparations ahead of the reconvening of Parliament.

He explained that the meeting was intended to enable the caucus to strategise and coordinate its parliamentary business ahead of the new sitting.

“On the contrary, ahead of the reconvening of Parliament, I have summoned my colleagues for our Caucus meeting, as is routinely done ahead of every Meeting of Parliament, to strategise and coordinate our parliamentary business,” he said.

Mr Afenyo-Markin stressed that such meetings were a regular practice within the caucus and should not be portrayed as an extraordinary development.

“This is a regular practice of the Caucus and should not be misrepresented as anything else,” he added.

He further called on Joy FM to withdraw what he described as the misinformation and correct the record.

“Pull down the misinformation on your website and correct the record,” he said.

The denial follows reports suggesting that the Minority Leader was expected to face questions from members of the NPP Parliamentary Caucus over allegations of extortion made against him by Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) Chief Executive Officer, Sammy Gyamfi.

Mr Afenyo-Markin’s statement, however, maintained that the caucus meeting was part of the normal arrangements ahead of Parliament’s reconvening and was not a disciplinary or investigative summons.
