Patrick Yaw Boamah, Member of Parliament for Okaikwei Central, has clarified his position regarding speculation about his interest in the minority leader role in Ghana’s Parliament.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosiisen program monitored by Kumasimail, Mr. Boamah dismissed rumors suggesting he wants to replace the current Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo Markin, and addressed claims of a strained relationship between them.
“There is no one in Parliament who will say that Hon. Afenyo Markin and I are not on good terms,” he said emphatically. “I have known him for a long time and we are very close. If I think a decision he makes is not the best, I tell him directly.”
Boamah recounted the period when some members sought to remove Afenyo Markin from his leadership position early in the 9th Parliament.
He revealed that he was one of the few who defended the Minority Leader, believing that his leadership should continue as the party transitioned into opposition.
He explained, “I felt that when he became Majority Leader, it didn’t last for a year before we went into opposition. We are building young people in the party to aspire, so why must we change the leadership?”
Addressing direct questions about his own leadership ambitions, Boamah stated clearly, “I have never said that I want to be the leader.”
When the host pointed out that many party members were rooting for him to take over as Minority Leader, Boamah reiterated, “I told my brother I am not interested.”
“That doesn’t mean we can’t have different views within the caucus. We are a party and minority working towards winning the next general election, and must be strategic in how we operate,” he added.
He cautioned against leaking internal disagreements to the public, saying, “Disagreements within meetings should remain private. It is not democratic nor productive for internal debates to be aired publicly. I advise my colleagues that what happens in caucus meetings must stay confidential.”
