Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is reportedly concerned about the growing public controversy surrounding his cousin and former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, who is currently outside the country.
Sources familiar with the matter say the former president wants Mr Ofori-Atta to return from the United States to respond to allegations being investigated by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).
However, he is said to be seeking assurances of safe passage through the Kotoka International Airport to prevent possible arrest or public embarrassment.
According to insiders, President John Dramani Mahama has rejected any such arrangement, insisting that due process must be followed and that no individual should be given special treatment under the law.
Kenneth Ofori-Atta, who served as Finance Minister from 2017 until early 2024, has been under investigation by the OSP over alleged corruption and corruption-related offences during his tenure in office.
The Special Prosecutor has cited several matters under investigation, including procurement processes related to the National Cathedral project, contracts for ambulance spare parts, and revenue assurance arrangements involving the Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML).
The OSP has accused the former minister of causing financial loss to the state and abusing public office, allegations Mr Ofori-Atta has previously denied.
Earlier this year, the OSP declared Mr Ofori-Atta wanted after he failed to honour invitations to appear before investigators, citing medical reasons and his stay abroad.
The office has maintained that he must return to Ghana to answer questions relating to the ongoing investigations.
Government sources say President Mahama is determined to allow the legal process to run its full course, stressing that accountability and the rule of law remain central to his administration’s anti-corruption agenda.
Neither Mr Ofori-Atta nor representatives of former President Akufo-Addo have officially commented on the latest developments.
